Fall Salad with roasted pear, blue cheese and pecans is a warm and hearty salad that still feels fresh and vibrant. Bursting with wintry ingredients; caramelised pear, crispy bacon, creamy cheese, nuts, dried fruit, fresh salad leaves, and a peppery mustard vinaigrette, it makes one heck of a special occasion salad.

I’m sure I say this every turn of the season, but I love this time of year! It is the least subtle in its approach; all of a sudden, the leaves are golden, orange and ochre. The fruits and vegetables in the stores are larger, firmer, more colourful.
Orchard fruits, like pears, are coming to the end of their season now, making way for the arrival of mandarins and bright red cranberries. Both signal Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner- the ideal time to make this Thanksgiving pear salad.
Too soon? Never!
The appeal of Fall salads
A Fall salad’s signature is warm ingredients. It could be roasted butternut squash or beetroot, toasted nuts, or baked fruit. Roasting and toasting are synonymous with cosy comfort, which is why we turn to fall recipes when the days get shorter and colder.
What’s more, Fall salad recipes are bountiful! Just look at the variety in this one. And variety means extra nutritious (just what we need with cold season lurking close by), and more visually appealing. A far cry from a monotone summer green salad!
This pear salad might call for some less obvious salad ingredients, but that’s what makes it so special. Still accessible, still affordable, but a little luxurious too.

Key ingredients and easy swaps
There are some main players in this Fall salad, but don’t feel you have to tick all the boxes! I know blue cheese isn’t for everyone- my son included! So, here’s why the recipe works and some subtle suggestions if you want alternatives:
- firm pears: sweet and syrupy when cooked, they are the crowning golden glory. No swaps here, I’m afraid!
- thick cut bacon: salty and crispy, homemade bacon bits balance the sticky pears and offer texture. Leave out to make meat-free.
- blue cheese: pungent and creamy and known for its pleasing partnership with pears. Swap: crumbly goat cheese or This is an affiliate link.Parmesan.
- toasted pecans: butter and caramel notes match the roasted pears, and give nutty crunch. Swap: walnuts or pistachios.
- dried cranberries: shining like rubies for wow-factor, bringing signature chewiness, and a tart pop. Sweet swap: dried cherries or figs.
- salad leaves: I use a handy bag of mixed leaves for variety, but any bitter leaved lettuce or mild spinach will work.
- wholegrain mustard: a touch of fire and warmth in the pear salad dressing.
How to make the salad
There are only six simple steps to follow, including making the pear salad dressing:
- Slice and sear the pears. You want caramel coloured edges.
- Toast the pecans for 3 minutes. Watch they don’t catch!
- At the same time, roast the pears. (Skip for overripe pears.)
- Fry the bacon and blot excess fat. Cool and chop into small pieces.
- Make the dressing by combining all the salad dressing ingredients and shaking well in a lidded jar.
- Assemble in this order: salad leaves, chopped bacon, toasted pecans, dried cranberries, blue cheese. Drizzle over the vinaigrette and toss gently to coat. Place the roasted pears on top.

Important Recipe Tips and Notes
- Use firm pears for roasting to prevent them turning too soft or falling apart.
- If they are on the riper side, still sear but skip the roasting part.
- Prep a day in advance if you’re tight on time, follow steps 1 – 5, omitting 3. You want warm pears for your salad so roast them on the day.
- Swap the cheese if Blue is too strong for you.
- Add grilled chicken or steak to round the salad into a balanced meal.
What goes with it
As I’ve mentioned, this is a celebration salad! A little too good for your average weeknight family meal. So, this fall salad recipe should be earmarked as 1) a side for Thanksgiving and Christmas, or 2) an elegant, intimate, seasonal dinner for four.
- Serve alongside a centrepiece roast turkey with sweet potatoes and honey garlic parsnips for a low-maintenance approach that still stops the show.
- A glorious prime rib joint with honey mustard glaze (if they’re really good friends). The beef glaze echoes some of the pear salad elements and compliments the others naturally.
If you’re not feeling so flush, a simple spatchcock roast chicken will do the trick too!
Storage and leftovers
If you’re in the throes of Thanksgiving prep, get ahead with a few of the steps in advance (see above). Store all the pre-prepped elements appropriately until the next day, then assemble ten minutes before serving.
Salad once dressed does not keep well, and the nature of this warm pear salad means it must be eaten before the pears go cold. But trust me, it will all get gobbled up anyway!
