We have come to the time of year when the days shorten, meaning we need to keep an eye out for anything to brighten up our days. If you are like me, a pumpkin spice latte can be just the treat to make a dismal, grey day feel just a bit more pleasant.
It has become the fuel that keeps this engine running, but buying pumpkin spice lattes from a coffee shop can become a money pit! Fortunately, it’s possible to get your pumpkin spice fix at home!
Pumpkin spice
Pumpkin spice syrup is so popular because it takes all of those warm, comforting flavours we associate with the autumn months and bottles them for us to enjoy at any time.
There will be variations but the main flavours we look for in pumpkin spice are cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger. All of these are very easy to find in the spice aisle of your supermarket.
These spices combine with the taste of the pumpkin purée to make the pumpkin spice flavour we all know and love. Canned purée will do just fine but it is also easy to make your own if you are feeling ambitious.
Making the syrup
Making the syrup is as simple as it comes. All that is needed is to combine the ingredients in a saucepan.
Bring them to a simmer and let them bubble away over low heat for 5 to 7 minutes. Pour it through a strainer into a bottle or other container and let it cool down.
That’s it! And because it is dead easy to make and takes literally 10 minutes, you can keep a fresh bottle on the go all through the season.
Store the syrup in an air tight container in your refrigerator.
