Spicy Caesar cocktail is the bolder, zingier cousin of a Bloody Mary. The modestly alcoholic (for a cocktail!) vodka drink is spiced with Tabasco, blended with a special savoury Caesar mix, and garnished to high heaven. Making it the ideal libation for a weekend brunch.

If brunch is a bit early for a beverage, serve your spicy Caesar drink later in the day with decadent crab cakes and Parmesan truffle fries.

The classic Caesar cocktail has a special place in my heart. As do all things Canadian! Yes, this Bloody Mary alternative was created in Canada, and even has its own national day (15th May, fyi!).

But it’s not just the spicy Caesar’s roots that I’m fond of. It’s an intensely savoury, smack-in-the-face kind of cocktail that’s long and not too strong for easy day-time drinking. Who’s coming for brunch?

What makes a Caesar?

The classic Caesar cocktail might look like a Bloody Mary on the outside but it is very different on the inside. While they are both tomato-heavy, savoury, vodka-based cocktails with a dash of sauce and sprinkling of seasoning, one can be vegetarian while the other is, well, fishy.

Besides vodka, the key ingredient is clamato juice (clam+ tomato, get it?), making the Caesar cocktail a more coastal variation that tastes undeniably oceanic!

What’s more, the Caesar has a host of condiments that contribute to its umaminess. Follow my Caesar cocktail recipe to the letter for smoky, salty, sweet and spicy notes.

Ingredients

I’ve developed the classic Caesar cocktail recipe to my and Brad’s tastes, after tasting numerous versions across Western Canada this summer. But all the ingredients can be dialled up or down according to yours.

The essentials are vodka and This is an affiliate link.clamato juice. The amount of clamato juice you use is up to you. Adjust to make a stronger or more dilute cocktail.

Clamato juice, if you don’t already know it, is primarily tomato juice with a small amount of clam broth. It’s not super clammy, it’s subtle!

Tabasco sauce and dill pickle brine can be tinkered with too depending on how spicy and punchy you prefer it.

  • I’ve used five condiments in my spicy Caesar mix, all of which were sitting in my stores: This is an affiliate link.Worcestershire sauce for a savoury hit
  • BBQ sauce for sweetness
  • This is an affiliate link.Sriracha for a fiery kick
  • a sprinkle of steak spice for zesty herbs and smoke
  • and This is an affiliate link.soy sauce for salt.

This umami union is blended into your Caesar drink resulting in a 6/10 on the spice scale. Feel free to play with the Caesar mix proportions until it’s perfect for you.

How to make it

There are three stages to crafting the perfect Caesar cocktail:

  1. the Caesar mix: combine all the condiment ingredients together and keep in the fridge until needed. My mix measures are enough for a batch of 16 cocktails.
  2. blending the complete drink: you can increase the measures of drink ingredients and make a pitcher for the fridge, or make each glass up one at a time.

For individual cocktails:

First, prepare the glass by half-coating the rim with lime and then up-ending on a plate of This is an affiliate link.Tajín seasoning. Then, fill the glass with ice cubes. Pour in the liquid ingredients: vodka and Caesar mix, the dashes of Tabasco to your taste, and a squeeze of lime. Finally, fill to the top with the clamato juice and stir until evenly mixed.

3. embellishing with insane garnishes: the world is your oyster on this one, or should I say clam? (see Serving suggestions for inspo)

Important Recipe Tips and Notes

  • What makes the Caesar a Caesar is the clamato juice. Tinker with anything you like except this star ingredient.
  • This easy mixed drink is perfect for batch cocktail making. Keep a pitcher in the fridge for a big Sunday brunch gathering.
  • Cocktails should be cold. Don’t be shy with the ice.

Serving suggestions

This is one of the most exciting elements of a spicy Caesar drink! You can go way out there with the garnish!

Must-haves:

  • a tall glass with lots of room for ice and a long straw
  • a lime wedge and a spicy rim, I use margarita-hero, This is an affiliate link.Tajín

Make it your own:

  • pickled veg: green beans, green olives, cornichon (baby gherkin)
  • fresh veg: celery stick, asparagus spear, plum tomato on a stick
  • meat: pepperoni stick, crispy maple bacon, beef jerky
  • wow factor: devilled egg, oyster on the half-shell, banderillas (Spanish tapa skewer)

While it can be tempting, don’t overload your cocktail with accessories. The Caesar drink should still be the star of the show.

Storage and leftovers

There are a few components to bring together for this batch cocktail, but they can be broken down into simple stages and spaced out over time making them easy to store and easy to serve:

You can pre-mix the Caesar mix up to 7 days in advance. Just keep it in an airtight jar in the fridge until needed.

The complete spicy Caesar cocktail can be combined in a pitcher on the day and refrigerated.

If you’re going for snazzy garnishes cocktail skewer-style, you can prep them ahead too and keep them in a This is an affiliate link.storage container until serving the individual cocktails glass by glass.
